ELT-1 Bilingualism,Trilingualism, Multilingualism

  • What is language?
                                      Language is a set of Symbols being used mainly for Communication. The Symbols may be Spoken, Written, action and gesture…etc.

“A language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols by means of which a social group co- operates.”
                                                                                                                                - Bloch and Trager

“Language is the expression of ideas by means of speech –sounds combined in to words. Words are combined in to sentences this combination answering to that of ideas in to thoughts." 


  • Language Acquisition:
“Language Acquisition is the Subconscious development off language that takes place as a result of interactions and input."
  • Language learning:

“Language learning is the result of direct instruction in the rules, structures or lexis of the languages.

1.) Bilingualism:
                                           
                                               Defining Bilingualism in just a few words is not simple, as each individual has different bilingual characteristics but I can say in briefly its means that ability to speak in two languages. In Another words I say Bilingualism is the ability of an individual or the members of a community to use two languages effectively. It is the use of two languages, either by an individual speaker or by community of speakers. It’s called ‘Bilingualism’. Here I put example of Bilingualism.

2. Afrikaans- Gelukkige verjaarsdag

Child:

1. English- Child
2. Catalan- nen

I love you:

1. English- I love you
2. Spanish- Te Amo
3. French- Je T'aime

2.) Trilingualism:

                             In Simple way I can say that who has ability to conducting, writing and speaking in three languages fluently. This word origin in mid 19th century from ‘tri- three’ + Latin lingua ‘tongue’ + al. Here I put one word which speaking and writing in different way in three languages.

3.) Multilingualism:

                                 Multilingualism is the use of more than one language, either by an individual speaker or by a community of speakers. People who speak several languages are also called Polyglots. So here I put following example and words of Multilingualism like as,

Happy Birthday:

1. English- happy birthday
2. Afrikaans- Gelukkige verjaarsdag
3. Chinese-  Shengri Kuile
4. Danish- Tillykke med fodselsdagen
5. Dutch- Fijne verjaardag

Child:

1. English- Child
2. Catalan- nen
3. Croatian- dijete
4. Czech- dite
5. Danish- barn

I love you:

1. English- I love you
2. Spanish- Te Amo
3. French- Je T'aime
4. German- Ich Liebe Dich
5. Japanese- Ai shite Imasu
6. Italian- Ti Amo
7. Chinese- Wo Ai Ni
